A compact, hybrid furniture piece that serves a variety of everyday needs. Created in response to the way many people live and work today, when work can take place anywhere in the home.
While there are many C-shaped side tables on the market, most serve primarily as decorative accent pieces beside a sofa. This project takes a more functional approach with a table suitable for working on a laptop or enjoying a meal while seated on a sofa or in bed. To meet these requirements, the table is taller than most comparable designs and features a larger work surface. An integrated stand for a tablet or smartphone further expands its functionality. Rounded edges and a plywood construction make the table pleasant to use and touch, offering a warmer alternative to the glass and steel commonly used in similar products.
Rather than the table itself, the product consists of the digital fabrication files, following the principles of distributed manufacturing. All components are CNC-machined from plywood of a single thickness. After having the parts manufactured and sourcing the required hardware, users assemble the table themselves and choose the finish to suit their preferences.
The components are CNC-machined from plywood and assembled using an interlocking slot-fit construction. Assembly requires only four L-brackets, four casters, and wood screws.
The table was designed with material efficiency in mind. Components for three tables can be CNC-cut from a single standard sheet of Baltic birch plywood measuring 2440 × 1220 mm (4′ × 8′), generating minimal waste.
