PROJECT TYPE

Self-initiated project

MATERIAL

Reclaimed pallet wood

The idea was to design a series of projects using reclaimed materials within the DIY philosophy. By DIY, I mean making practical household items yourself using conventional materials and common hand and power tools. For this project,

I chose wood reclaimed from dismantled shipping pallets—more specifically, a single type of slat from the top deck. Thanks to its structural properties, wide availability, and versatility, the wooden pallet has become one of the most popular materials for DIY furniture and countless woodworking projects.

A step stool is a simple, compact, and highly practical piece of furniture. In a way, it also reflects the very nature of a wooden pallet, which is itself designed to elevate and support loads. That association made a step stool the perfect choice for the first project in this series. The goal was not only to design a functional piece of furniture, but also to create a detailed step-by-step DIY guide that anyone could follow to build it.
